SEO & PPC News | 10-09-2018 – Google Datasets, Search Console & More


Darren Taylor: Google have finally
mainstreamed an update to its search console, we also see them release
a brand new way of searching for datasets, and in addition to that, we
have a search engine that’s beloved by a few select people that has a
birthday to celebrate as well. This is search engine news. Let’s get into it. Hey there guy’s, Darren Taylor
of thebigmarketer.co.uk here, and my job is to teach you all
about search engine marketing. If that’s like your street, you

forget to ring the bell. Today is time for search engine news. I’m going to start doing
more of these videos. This is the first one I’m really
seeing in terms of getting the news out there of what’s going on in the
world of search engine marketing. So let’s get right into it. First of all, the
Google search console’s new interface is being mainstreamed and rolled out as a normal standard
interface and it’s come out of Beta. So, of course, you may
have noticed that the Google search console had
a nice facelift and it looks a lot better, a
lot cleaner, it loads a lot faster, but it may
be missing some reports. Well, in either case, Google have
now mainstreamed this product. So if you log into search
console by default, you shouldn’t be able
to see the old view. Now, I’m well aware, I just
said there’s some reports missing, so luckily for us,
Google has actually made the old interface still available in order
to find some of the reports that there are that aren’t
available in the new interface. Don’t panic, don’t worry, the
new interface will eventually get all of those reports,
but at the moment you have to cross over between the two
in order to find all of the reports you’re used to seeing
in the search console. Either way, it goes
again to show Google’s updates to all of its
products in terms of its interface, and
the loading speed, and the look and feel consistency. So this is yet another update Google
have made that has gone mainstream. Next up, we have a minor
update to Google Chrome. When you go to Chrome and you head to
the address bar and do a search, as soon as Google starts predicting what
you’re searching, they normally show you a list of search
results that they think you’re looking for, and you can click one of those
and go straight through to the search results page. That functionality has
always been there. However, a new update to
Chrome means that when you start typing in a
search query, the actual suggested answers can
contain the answer you’re looking for directly
for your question. So if you type in something
Google knows the answer to, you haven’t
even got to hit search because Google will show
you the answer as an automated result in the
suggested searches. Nice little feature, not
too important, not a huge bit of news, but interesting
nonetheless, and shows the direction Google
are going in, in terms of making people access
information a lot easier. Again, if you think about
the kind of websites where you used to get a lot
of traffic from queries and things like that
with the Google answers box, you know that you’re
going to lose traffic. Be very well aware of
Google’s direction of travel when it comes to
information on the web. Up next, Google has
released a brand new search engine for finding datasets. Now, this is an interesting one
because, of course, people in the scientific, statistic
and economic community often want to find studies and
suggestions of data in terms of what kind of statistics
they need for their studies. This search engine puts
them all in one place and allows people to search for
statistics that will help them develop their business,
or help them develop statistics for themselves and
studies they can relate to. Having this feature and
functionality to be searched is great and it’s
called Google Datasets. Now, I’m very aware we’re
in the era of fake news. So of course, how does Google
know what a real dataset is and what isn’t, and if
I want to lie about data and publish it on their
Google data search, then I could potentially go ahead
and make some fake data. You think so, right? In actual fact, Google
knows this could be an issue, therefore, you need to make
sure what datasets are accurate. There’s a specific
markup language you can use as well, and the
review process to boot as well, so there’s
no way you can try to lie or trick Google
around the data. Some will slip through the net as
they usually do, but at the same time, this new way of searching
has a specific markup and I’ve linked up in the description,
Google’s rules for applying to get listed as a dataset, so you can see
those in the description below. Next up, Google have announced that websites with a lot
of JavaScript will struggle to get indexed
from a mobile first point of view, meaning that websites that heavy in JavaScript, so that may struggle to display
properly and correctly on mobile devices may struggle to be
indexed from the mobile first web. Therefore, it’s really,
really important if you do have a website, that
uses a lot of JavaScript code to minimize that and
make sure that you do have the balance between
actual HTML documents and JavaScript, because if you
have too heavy in favor of JavaScript, then
unfortunately, Google are going to see you as a threat to
the mobile web, and they won’t actually allow you
to index mobile first. Again, that could put you at a huge
disadvantage against our competitors. So it’s just general good
practice anyway when you’re building web pages
for a mobile first world anyway, you don’t go too
heavy on JavaScript, but Google have actually
mentioned this now. I know it’s been said many,
many, many times before, but of course, always remember the mantra,
say it with me, mobile first. Finally, we’ll end on some
good news and that is the search engine DuckDuckGo is
celebrating its 10th birthday. If you don’t know what DuckDuckGo
is it’s a search engine that has privatized searches meaning no one
else can read what you’re searching. Now obviously with
Google ads and Bing ads, Google obviously knows
what you’re searching. They obviously use that searching
as data points for other products as well that feed into a
whole ecosystem of advertising and targeting, so that is a
disadvantage to a lot of users that don’t necessarily want
to be tracked across the web. DuckDuckGo fills that gap
and makes sure that the searches you perform are
actually private to yourself. Will it ever be as big
as Google or Bing? Of course it’s not. It just isn’t, and also
it can’t be monetized in the same way that
Bing ads and Google ads has monetized their
respective search engines, but at the same time
it’s a good product, and it’s consistently
been growing, and it’ll continue to grow as
well especially as more people become
aware of their online footprint, and they want
to protect themselves. This will continue to
grow in that respect. In addition to that,
they recently secured $10 million worth of funding which is a really, really nice birthday
present I wish someone would give me. I wish DuckDuckGo all the best. I’m sure you will as well and
you watch them grow, and continue to grow, but unfortunately,
I’m sure their market share isn’t going to be the
same heights as Google or even Bing, but either way,
I wish them all the best. That completes our search
