Dorian approaches hurricane strength, on path to brush Puerto Rico

CHANNEL 7 EYEWITNESS NEWS. >>>NOW TO THE CARIBBEAN WHERE MANY ARE BRACING FOR IMPACT AS TROPICAL STORM DORIAN MOVES CLOSER TOWARD LAND. JUST MOMENTS AGO WE GOT THE LATEST UPDATE ON DORIAN’S STRENGTH AND WHAT KIND OF THREAT THE STORM COULD POSE TO PUERTO RICO AND TO FLORIDA. METEOROLOGIST JEFF SMITH IN FOR LEE TONIGHT. HE’S OUTSIDE WITH THE LATEST ON WHAT DORIAN’S TRACK IS. >>WITH THAT NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER ADVISORY THAT CAME OUT A FEW MINUTES AGO, IT’S A GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS SITUATION. THE BAD NEWS IS THIS STORM LOOKS TO MAKE A DIRECT LANDFALL ON PUERTO RICO, PROBABLY LATER ON TOMORROW EVENING. IT’S HAVING A HARD TIME INTENSIFYING. YOU LOOK AT THE SATELLITE PICTURE RIGHT NOW, IT’S LOOKING A LITTLE BIT RAGGED, DRY AIR IN THE MID LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE GETTING THEM TRAINED IN THE CENTER. WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO WATCH IT VERY CAREFULLY NONETHELESS AS IT CHUGS OFF TO THE WEST AND NORTHWEST. WINDS RIGHT NOW ABOUT 15 MILES PER HOUR. BUT THAT’S LOCATED AROUND THE CENTER OF THE STORM. THERE ARE TROPICAL STORM WARNINGS FOR PUERTO RICO AND NOW ALSO THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS FOR TOMORROW INTO TOMORROW NIGHT SO WE ARE VERY CONFIDENT OF TROPICAL STORM FORCED WINDS ON THE ISLAND OF PUERTO RICO AND ALSO THE VIRGIN ISLANDS. HURRICANE WATCH IN EFFECT JUST IN CASE THIS TRIES TO DO LAST MINUTE INTENSIFICATION INTO A MINIMAL HURRICANE BEFORE IT ACTUALLY MAKES LANDFALL. THIS IS THE TRACK THAT WE ARE EXPECTING. YOU SEE PUERTO RICO IS REALLY IN THE CROSSHAIRS OF THE STORM. BY 2:00 P.M. SOUTH OF PUERTO RICO, PROBABLY MAKING LANDFALL ON THE SOUTHWESTERN COAST OF PUERTO RICO, NOT TOO FAR FROM PONCE, ABOUT 65-MILE-PER-HOUR WINDS WHEN IT MAKES LANDFALL. THE ISLAND OF PUERTO RICO ITSELF MIGHT RIP THE STORM APART A LITTLE BIT AND WEAKEN IT DOWN TO 45 MILES PER HOUR AFTER IT MOVES PAST THERE BUT THEN IT RESTRENGTHENS OVER THE VERY WARM WATERS OF THE BAHAMAS AND THREAT TO THE SOUTHEAST U.S. COAST AS WE HEAD INTO THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND. BUT IN THE MEANTIME THIS IS WHAT WE ARE EXPECTING WITH PUERTO RICO LATER ON TOMORROW, TOMORROW EVENING. POSSIBILITY OF 60 TO 80-MILE- PER-HOUR WIND GUSTS, SOUTHWESTERN COAST OF PUERTO RICO, 40 TO 60-MILE-PER-HOUR WIND GUSTS ACROSS THE REST OF THE ISLAND. ALSO THREE TO 6 INCHES OF RAIN, MAYBE SOME ISOLATED 8-INCH AMOUNTS. THE GOOD NEWS WITH THIS, IT’S MOVING ALONG QUICKLY ENOUGH SO THESE EFFECTS WILL NOT LINGER FOR TOO LONG. EVEN THOUGH WE ARE NOT EXPECTING A REPEAT OF MARIA
